Advance Guardian Heroes is a 2004 side-scrolling beat 'em up for the Game Boy Advance, serving as the sequel to the Sega Saturn classic Guardian Heroes. Developed by Treasure, the game continues the story years after the original, following three new protagonists—Enn, Ray, and Hyu—who must stop the dark mage Kanon and his forces.
Key Gameplay Features
- Combat System: Unlike the "lane-based" movement of its predecessor, this entry allows for free, "belt-scrolling" movement across the screen. It features a deep combat system with over 160 moves, including counters, dashes, and magic spells.
- RPG Elements: Players collect crystals from defeated enemies to upgrade seven character attributes: Vitality, Mind, Attack, Defense, Magical Attack, Magical Defense, and Mobility.
- Devil Mode: If a player's HP reaches zero, they can choose to enter "Devil Mode," granting six minutes of invincibility and immense power at the cost of a guaranteed "Bad Ending".
- Roster: The game includes over 20 playable characters, including the original heroes (like Han and Ginjirou) who can be unlocked by defeating them and donating crystals.
Game Modes
- Story Mode: A six-stage campaign that can be played solo or in two-player co-op via Link Cable.
- Versus Mode: Supports up to four players in competitive arenas.
- Survival & Training: Modes designed to test skill against endless waves or practice complex combos.
