Fire Emblem The Sacred Stones is a tactical role-playing game developed by Intelligent Systems and published by Nintendo for the Game Boy Advance (GBA). Released in late 2004 in Japan and mid-2005 internationally, it is the eighth entry in the series and the third and final installment for the GBA.

Core Story and Setting

Set on the continent of Magvel, the story follows royal twins Princess Eirika and Prince Ephraim of the Kingdom of Renais.

  • The Conflict: The peaceful continent is thrown into chaos when the Grado Empire, a long-time ally, suddenly invades its neighbors.
  • The Mission: The twins must rally allies and protect the five "Sacred Stones"—ancient artifacts used to seal away a demonic force—before they are destroyed by the empire.
  • Diverging Paths: After an initial prologue, the game splits into two separate routes following either Eirika or Ephraim, each offering unique chapters and story perspectives before converging for the finale.

Gameplay Mechanics

The game utilizes a turn-based, grid-oriented tactical system where positioning and unit management are critical.

  • Permadeath: If a character's health reaches zero, they are permanently removed from the game, adding significant weight to every decision.
  • World Map: Unlike its predecessors on the GBA, this entry features a traversable world map. Players can move between locations to visit shops, enter optional skirmishes, or tackle dungeons like the Tower of Valni to gain extra experience.
  • Branching Promotions: Most units have a choice between two different advanced classes upon promotion (e.g., a Cavalier can become a Paladin or a Great Knight), allowing for more flexible army customization.
  • Monster Battles: The game introduces diverse monster enemies (such as zombies, gargoyles, and skeletons) inspired by earlier series entries.
