Harvest Moon DS is a farming simulation role-playing game released for the Nintendo DS in 2006 (North America). It is the first entry in the series developed for the DS hardware and combines the 2D graphical style of Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town with the setting and characters of Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life.
Core Premise & Story
The game is set in Forget-Me-Not Valley, where the player takes over a run-down farm. The overarching plot involves a conflict between the Harvest Goddess and the Witch Princess.
- The Mission: After the Witch Princess accidentally petrifies the Harvest Goddess and banishes her to another dimension, she also scatters 101 Harvest Sprites.
- Goal: The player must rescue at least 60 Sprites to bring back the Harvest Goddess, which is achieved by performing various farming tasks and meeting specific hidden requirements.
Gameplay Features
The game retains traditional series mechanics like growing crops and raising livestock while introducing new DS-specific features.
- Farming & Livestock: Players can plant various crops and trees, and raise animals including cows, sheep, chickens, and ducks.
- Dual-Screen Integration: The bottom touch screen is used for managing inventory, checking the map, and interacting with animals through petting minigames.
- Building Customization: Unlike previous entries, players can choose where to place farm structures (like barns and sheds) and what materials (fodder, wood, stone, or golden lumber) to use, which affects their durability.
- Social Life & Marriage: There are numerous bachelorettes to woo, including special candidates like a mermaid named Leia or a princess named Keira who lives deep in the mines.
- Mining: The game features four distinct mines with varying depths; the deepest reaches up to 65,535 floors.
GBA Connectivity
By inserting a Game Boy Advance copy of Friends of Mineral Town or More Friends of Mineral Town into the DS's Slot 2, players can unlock extra content. This includes visits from Mineral Town characters and the ability to marry bachelorettes from that game, though doing so immediately ends the game after the wedding.
