DemiKids: Light Version is a role-playing game (RPG) developed by Multimedia Intelligence Transfer and published by Atlus for the Game Boy Advance (GBA) in 2003. As part of the Shin Megami Tensei franchise, specifically the Devil Children sub-series, it was designed as a more accessible, monster-collecting alternative to the core series' darker themes.

Story and Protagonist

Set in the year 200X, the story follows Jin, a sixth-grade student and member of his school's "Mystery Club". After a summoning ritual goes wrong, Jin is transported to the fantasy land of Valhalla. Accompanied by his guardian demon, the Sun Lion Rand, Jin joins a rebellion against the oppressive Imperium forces to repair a rift in time that threatens both the demon and human worlds.

Core Gameplay Features

  • Demon Recruitment: Players use a gun-like device called a Demiloc to negotiate with and capture over 350 unique demons.
  • Turn-Based Combat: Battles are handled in a first-person perspective, requiring strategic command of a party of up to four demons.
  • Fusion System: A hallmark of the series, players can combine two demons to create a more powerful one or use special items and relics to inherit new skills.
  • Version Connectivity: Light Version is the counterpart to Dark Version. Some demons are exclusive to each game, requiring a link cable to trade and complete the full collection.

Light vs. Dark Version

While both games share the same starting premise, they quickly diverge into distinct adventures with different protagonists, locations, and difficulty levels:

  • Difficulty: Light Version is often described as the "Easy Mode" or more player-friendly option, featuring simplified mechanics and a higher abundance of items and currency ("macca") compared to the more challenging Dark Version.
  • Narrative Focus: Jin's story in Light Version leans toward the "Law" path traditional to the series, while Akira's path in Dark Version is more "Chaos" oriented.
