Castlevania: Circle of the Moon was a flagship launch title for the Game Boy Advance in 2001. It is a 2D action-RPG that follows the "Metroidvania" style, combining non-linear exploration with character leveling and equipment collection. 

Core Gameplay Mechanics

• Dual Set-Up System (DSS): The game's standout feature allows players to combine two types of magic cards—Action and Attribute—to create over 80 to 100 unique spell effects. These range from infusing Nathan's whip with elements like fire or ice to summoning powerful creatures and providing passive stat buffs.
• Combat & Exploration: You play as Nathan Graves, a vampire hunter who primarily uses a whip and classic sub-weapons (like the axe and holy water) to navigate Dracula's castle. Progression is gated by "relics" that grant new movement abilities, such as double jumping or smashing stone blocks, allowing you to reach previously inaccessible areas.
• High Difficulty: It is often cited as one of the most challenging handheld Castlevania titles. It features a punishing difficulty curve, limited health restoration items, and a brutal optional Battle Arena that disables magic use.
• Alternate Modes: After beating the game, you can unlock specialized modes like Magician (high MP/all cards), Fighter (high stats/no magic), Shooter (powerful sub-weapons), and Thief (high luck) by using specific name codes. 

Story & Setting

Set in 1830 Europe, the game follows Nathan Graves as he enters an old Austrian castle to rescue his mentor, Morris Baldwin, from a resurrected Dracula. Nathan must also deal with a growing rivalry with his fellow apprentice and Morris's son, Hugh Baldwin, who is jealous that Nathan was chosen as the successor to the "Hunter Whip".
