Nintendo DS non oem Castlevania Order of Ecclesia video game cartridge. Game cartridge comes with a plastic protective case just like the picture shows.

Released in 2008 for the Nintendo DS, Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia is the third and final installment of the franchise on that platform. It is notably the first canonical entry in the series to feature a female protagonist, Shanoa, and is the only DS title that isn't a direct sequel to a previous game.

Core Gameplay Mechanics

The game introduces several unique systems that distinguish it from its predecessors:

  • Glyph System: Replacing traditional sub-weapons and physical whips, Shanoa uses magical glyphs absorbed from enemies or found in the world. There are over 100 combinations of fighting, passive, and ability glyphs that consume MP for every attack.
  • Glyph Union: By equipping certain glyphs in both hands, Shanoa can perform powerful "Union" attacks that consume Heart Points.
  • World Map Structure: Unlike many "Metroidvanias" set entirely in one castle, this game features an overworld map with 20 distinct locations, including forests, mountains, and oceans.
  • Wygol Village: Serves as a central hub where Shanoa rescues villagers. Rescued villagers offer side quests that unlock new items in the shop.

Plot and Setting

Set in the early 1800s after the Belmont Clan has vanished, the story follows the Order of Ecclesia, one of several organizations formed to combat Dracula's inevitable return.

  • The Ritual: Shanoa is chosen to be the vessel for Dominus, a triad of glyphs meant to destroy Dracula. However, her brother Albus steals the glyphs mid-ritual, causing Shanoa to lose her memories and emotions.
  • The Quest: Shanoa is tasked by the Order's leader, Barlowe, to retrieve the stolen glyphs from Albus.

Key Features and Content

  • High Difficulty: It is widely considered one of the most challenging entries in the modern series, requiring precise pattern memorization for its spectacle-filled boss battles.
  • Artistic Shift: The game abandoned the anime-inspired art of the previous DS titles in favor of a more traditional Gothic style.
  • Post-Game Modes: Completing the game unlocks various extras, including a Sound Test, Hard Mode, Boss Rush, and Albus Mode, which allows players to replay the game as Albus.
