Nintendo 64 non oem, Mario Kart 64 video game cartridge.
Mario Kart 64 is a classic kart racing-racing video game developed and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo 64 (N64). Released in 1996 in Japan and 1997 worldwide, it is the second installment in the Mario Kart series and the first to feature 3D track design and four-player simultaneous multiplayer.
Core Gameplay & Features
- 3D Track Design: The shift from the SNES's "Mode 7" to true 3D polygons allowed for tracks with varying elevations, bridges, and walls.
- Multiplayer Mayhem: Noted as one of the definitive multiplayer experiences for the N64, it introduced a revolutionary four-player split-screen mode for racing and battling.
- Unique Tracks: Features 16 distinct courses (divided into four Cups: Mushroom, Flower, Star, and Special), including iconic locations like Toad's Turnpike, Choco Mountain, and a massive, neon-lit Rainbow Road.
- Iconic Items: Introduced several series staples, most notably the Blue (Spiny) Shell, which targets the player in first place, and the ability to hold items behind the kart for defense.
- Weight Classes: Characters are divided into Lightweight (high acceleration), Middleweight (balanced), and Heavyweight (high top speed, able to knock others aside).
Playable Characters
The game features a roster of eight playable characters from the Mario universe:
- Returning: Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, Yoshi, and Bowser.
- New to the Series: Wario and Donkey Kong (replacing Koopa Troopa and Donkey Kong Jr. from the original game).
Game Modes
- Grand Prix: One or two players compete against CPU opponents in a series of four races across three difficulty levels: 50cc, 100cc, and 150cc.
- Versus (VS): Two to four human players race against each other on any track without computer-controlled racers.
- Battle Mode: A competitive arena mode for two to four players where the goal is to pop opponents' three balloons using items. Eliminated players can temporarily roam as Mini Bomb Karts to disrupt the remaining racers.
- Time Trials: A single-player mode focused on achieving the fastest lap times without items or opponents. Players can save "Ghost" data to a Controller Pak to race against their best times.
