New Super Mario Bros is a 2D side-scrolling platformer released for the Nintendo DS in May 2006. It marked the first original side-scrolling Mario platformer since Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins in 1992, successfully reviving the classic gameplay for a modern handheld audience.
Core Gameplay and Structure
The game follows Mario as he travels through eight unique worlds containing over 80 levels to rescue Princess Peach from Bowser and Bowser Jr..
- 2.5D Visuals: While the gameplay is strictly 2D side-scrolling, characters and enemies are rendered as 3D models (polygons) on 2D backgrounds, creating a "2.5D" look.
- Dual-Screen Use: The top screen hosts the main action, while the bottom touchscreen displays level progress and a stored item that can be tapped to activate.
- Classic & New Moves: In addition to running and jumping, Mario can perform moves originally introduced in 3D titles like the wall jump, triple jump, and ground pound.
- Collectibles: Each level contains three hidden Star Coins used to unlock secret paths, Toad Houses, and new backgrounds on the world map.
Power-Ups
Alongside classic items like the Super Mushroom and Fire Flower, the game introduced several new abilities:
|
Power-Up |
Ability |
|
Mega Mushroom |
Grows Mario to a giant size, allowing him to smash through enemies, pipes, and terrain. |
|
Mini Mushroom |
Shrinks Mario to a tiny size, allowing him to fit through small gaps, run on water, and jump exceptionally high. |
|
Blue Koopa Shell |
Allows Mario to retreat into a shell while dashing to "shell dash" through enemies; also improves swimming speed. |
Additional Game Modes
- Mario vs. Luigi: A competitive two-player mode where players race to collect Big Stars while attacking one another to steal them.
- Minigames: Features 28 touch-screen-based minigames (18 single-player, 10 multiplayer) divided into Action, Puzzle, Table, and Variety categories. Many of these were carried over from Super Mario 64 DS.
Critical Success
The game was a massive critical and commercial hit, praised for its faithful yet modernized approach to the Mario formula. It sold over 30 million copies worldwide, making it the best-selling game on the Nintendo DS.
