Grand Theft Auto ChinaTown Wars for the Nintendo DS is an open-world action-adventure game set in a modern-day rendition of Liberty City. It is notable for being the first original entry in the series designed specifically for the Nintendo DS, utilizing its hardware to introduce innovative touch-screen gameplay.
Plot and Setting
- Storyline: The game follows Huang Lee, the spoiled son of a recently murdered Triad boss. His simple mission to deliver an ancient family sword to his Uncle Kenny goes awry when he is robbed and left for dead.
- Setting: Set in Liberty City (excluding Alderney), the game features four sprawling boroughs—Algonquin, Bohan, Broker, and Dukes—faithfully adapted for the handheld.
- Mission Content: Over 70 story missions and dozens of side quests focus on crime and corruption within the Triad syndicate.
Gameplay and Features
- Perspective: Uses a rotatable aerial isometric camera that provides a top-down view of the 3D world, reminiscent of the original GTA titles but with modern 3D graphics.
- Touch Screen Integration: The bottom screen serves as a PDA interface, allowing players to set GPS waypoints, change radio stations, communicate via email, and order weapons from Ammu-Nation.
- Contextual Mini-Games: The touch screen is used for interactive tasks like hotwiring cars, digging through trash for weapons, assembling sniper rifles, and tattooing gang members.
- Street Economics: A major gameplay component is a detailed drug dealing minigame where players buy and sell six different narcotics to 80+ dealers based on a supply-and-demand economy.
- Police Evasion: Unlike other titles where you simply outrun the law, players must ram and disable police cars to lower their wanted level.
Multiplayer and Online
- Local Wireless: Supports head-to-head and co-op modes, including "Defend the Base" and standard races.
- Rockstar Games Social Club: Players could originally use the Wi-Fi connection to upload stats, trade items, and unlock special missions, such as the Xin Shan missions.
