Oriental Blue: Ao no Tengai is a Japanese role-playing game released for the Game Boy Advance on October 24, 2003. Developed by Red Entertainment and Hudson Soft, it is a spin-off of the popular Far East of Eden (Tengai Makyō) series. The game is known for its "free scenario" system, allowing for a non-linear experience where player choices and battle outcomes significantly alter the branching storyline.
Key Gameplay Features
- Non-Linear Storyline: Players can tackle many missions in any order. Losing a boss battle does not end the game; instead, it reveals a different story path.
- Dual Protagonists: You can choose to play as either Tenran (male) or Aoi (female). This choice changes the starting experience and how various in-game events unfold.
- Ma Stone Magic System: Magic is performed using "Ma Stones" dropped by monsters. These can be synthesized into stronger versions or slotted into gear to provide bonuses and new abilities.
- World-Building: The game features a "portable world" feel with diverse cultures inspired by Japan, China, Mongolia, and Thailand. It blends traditional East Asian aesthetics with "Schizo Tech"—futuristic technology from the Blue Clan.
- Traditional Combat: Despite the non-linear structure, it retains the series' classic first-person perspective, turn-based battle system.
Story & Setting
The story is set in a rich land where the death of the world's ruler, the Tentei, has led to chaos and rumors of the capital sinking into a demonic realm. The protagonist embarks on a quest with an ancient document to prove themselves worthy of the legendary Fire Clan and defeat the ancient evil threatening the land.
