Fire Emblem Sword of Seals (officially localized as Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade) is a tactical role-playing game released in 2002 for the Game Boy Advance (GBA). Developed by Intelligent Systems, it is the sixth installment in the Fire Emblem series and the first to appear on a handheld console.
Game Overview
The game is set on the continent of Elibe, a land once torn by a massive war between humans and dragons known as "The Scouring". The story follows Roy, a young nobleman from Pherae, who must lead an army to stop King Zephiel of Bern from conquering the continent with the help of a mysterious power.
Key Features
- Tactical Gameplay: Battles occur on grid-based maps where you manage diverse unit classes (like Knights, Mages, and Archers) in turn-based combat.
- Permadeath: Characters who fall in battle are permanently removed from the game, adding significant weight to every move.
- The Binding Blade: Roy eventually wields the eponymous legendary sword, which is central to the plot and a powerful late-game asset.
- Multiple Endings: Accessing the "True Ending" requires completing specific side-quests (Gaiden chapters) and obtaining all eight Legendary Weapons.
Regional Status and Legacy
- Japan Exclusive: The game was never officially released in English-speaking territories. This is a full English translation!
- Prequel Connection: Its 2003 successor, Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade (released simply as Fire Emblem in the West), is a prequel set 20 years earlier starring Roy's father, Eliwood.
