Advance Wars 1 is a critically acclaimed turn-based strategy game released for the Game Boy Advance (GBA) in 2001. Developed by Intelligent Systems (the team behind Fire Emblem), it is the first entry in the Nintendo Wars series to be released outside of Japan.

Core Gameplay

The game centers on tactical military combat across grid-based maps.

  • Units: Players command land, air, and sea forces, including infantry, tanks, bombers, and battleships. Each unit has specific movement ranges, fuel limits, and weapon types.
  • Combat: Battles are turn-based. Success depends on exploiting unit strengths and weaknesses (e.g., anti-air units against helicopters) and using terrain for defensive bonuses.
  • Commanding Officers (COs): You lead armies using unique COs like Andy, Max, and Sami. Each CO provides specific passive buffs and a powerful "CO Power" that can turn the tide of battle when their power meter is full.
  • Objectives: Most missions are won by either destroying all enemy units or capturing the enemy's Headquarters (HQ).

Key Features and Modes

  • Campaign Mode: A story-driven mode where you act as a tactical advisor for the Orange Star army, defending against rival nations before uncovering the true threat of the Black Hole Army.
  • Field Training: An interactive tutorial mode that teaches basic and advanced tactics.
  • War Room: A series of high-difficulty challenge missions that test your strategic efficiency.
  • Map Editor: Allows players to design, save, and play on their own custom battlefields.
  • Multiplayer: Supports up to four players via "Hot Seat" mode (passing one GBA around) or through the GBA Link Cable.

Style and Presentation

Despite its focus on warfare, the game features a bright, anime-inspired art style and an upbeat soundtrack. It is widely praised for its balance of deep strategic complexity and accessible, easy-to-learn mechanics.
